This museum, which is named for the former Texas lieutenant governor, houses three floors of exhibits that trace the history of Texas. Thru May 4: How the West Was Worn--more than 150 items of clothing (including things that belonged to Gene Autry, Tom Mix, Roy Rogers, and John Travolta) along with photography, period advertising, and design sketches, Opening May 3: Texas: The Big Picture--created for the museum, this new IMAX film, which will open worldwide in September, captures the myth, majesty, and magnitude of the state (shows daily; call for times & prices). Items in the center's collection range from a Gutenberg Bible to the world's first photograph (taken in 1826). The center also houses some 30 million literary manuscripts including those by James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and Tennessee Williams. After a $14 million renovation, the HRC opens its doors May 13 to its new exhibition galleries and space, allowing for more room to display its renowned holdings from its research, photography, and art collections. Highlights of the inaugural exhibit, In A New Light (thru Sept 14), include original art by Frida Kahlo, photographs by Walker Evans, manuscripts of Sinclair Lewis, and samples of theatrical designs by Norman Bel Geddes.
