Casey Jacobsen was the 22nd pick in the first round of the 2002 NBA draft. The former Stanford star averaged 5.1 points in 72 games as a rookie for the Phoenix Suns, and he helped the Suns beat San Antonio on Sunday to even their first-round playoff series, 2-2.

All in all, a successful rookie season. A year later, Jacobsen's decision to leave Stanford as a junior seems to have been a good one.

But it's not for everybody, he cautions.

Jacobsen, like Oregon's Luke Ridnour this season, declared for the draft but didn't hire an agent, leaving himself the option to return to school for his senior year. Despite pressure from friends and family to enter the NBA, Jacobsen said he was set on returning to Stanford when the deadline to make that decision approached. A couple of late workouts for pro teams, including the Suns, led him to roll the dice and stay in the draft.

It ended up being a worthwhile gamble for Jacobsen. But the stress of spending weeks on the draft...
