Here's what my flag stands for

Concerning Douglas G. Coffman's April 19 letter, "What does the flag stand for?": My flag reminds me daily of my grandfather (three Purple Hearts fighting for France in World War I), my dad (Army Air Corps in World War II), of 58,000 men not as fortunate as myself (Vietnam in '69) and my son (an F-15 crew chief in Desert Storm, '91).

My flag reminds me daily of President Bush's strong and courageous leadership. It reminds me of a very generous country that does so much to help nations less fortunate than ourselves.

My flag represents a president who believes it is an honor to conduct the nation's business from the Oval Office - unlike our former president, who used it like one of Saddam Hussein's love shacks!

Our flag represents a capitalistic society that rewards free thinkers, risk takers and the hardest working people with the biggest rewards.

The only thing in Coffman's letter that makes me wince is the fact that he is seemingly so unhappy and continues to live and pay taxes in a country and for a president he appears to abhor. Maybe it's time to pack up and go find a place more to his liking.

I am sincerely grateful to Coffman for writing his letter and The Register-Guard for publishing it. Such nonsense grows the conservative party by leaps and bounds.
