Few innovations in public education have been as dramatic in recent years as the concept of charter schools. The number of these schools have swelled from just a handful a few years ago to nearly 2,700 such schools in operation today in 36 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

California alone has nearly 450 charter schools at last count, serving nearly 170,000 students. Of those, more than 60 are in San Diego County, making the region one of the highest concentrations of charter schools in the nation.

While these schools have become big business in today's public education arena, there is still a great deal of confusion about what charter schools are, how they differ from traditional public schools, and what we should expect these new schools to accomplish.
