This business has had a stake in San Diego for more than 90 years.
Central Meat & Provision Co. was founded in 1912, originally as a market. Since then, it has become a meat supplier to restaurants and hotels, counting among its clients the Brigantine Seafood Restaurants, the Cohn Restaurant Group, and the Hotel del Coronado.
Another important client is Rancho Bernardo-based Paragon Steakhouse Restaurants, Inc., which owns Hungry Hunter Steakhouse and Carver's Steaks & Chops, among others. Central Meat supplies 25 Paragon restaurants in California, Arizona, and Utah, said Robert Kuhlken, who owns the company.
Central Meats, based Downtown, does about 75 percent of its business within San Diego County but hopes to acquire more customers in Orange County in the future, Kuhlken said.
Central Meat has been a family-owned company for four generations, boasting 35 employees. It generated about $22.7 million in revenues last year.
