While San Diego's lodging industry has lost business since the start of the war in Iraq, it has fared better than most markets across the country.

In March, the county's hotels had an occupancy rate of 69 percent, down 4.3 percent from the same month in 2002, according to figures from Smith Travel Data.

For the nation as a whole, the occupancy rate currently stands at about 59 percent.
