PROJECT OVERVIEW:

A British/Vietnamese joint venture, operating under the name of BAT VINATABA JOINT VENTURE LTD., recently started-up construction work on a planned cut rag tobacco processing plant. The partners in the planned undertaking include BRITISH AMERICA TOBACCO HOLDINGS (VIETNAM) BV, a subsidiary of UK-based BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO (BAT), and VIETNAM NATIONAL TOBACCO CORP. (VINATABA).

The new facility located in Long Binh Ward of Dong Nai Province, 40 kms from Ho Chi Minh City, will enable supplying some 40% of tobacco leaf from domestic sources with most being cultivated under the joint venture's Leaf Development Programme. In so doing, cut rag tobacco processed at the factory will be used for BAT brands now manufactured in Vietnam. The factory has an installed processing capacity that is reportedly sufficient for up to 20 billion cigarettes per year.

The cost to complete the project has been pegged at $40,000,000 and, project completion is scheduled for within 1 year. BAT employs a total staff of about 85,800. The company is acknowledged to be the world's most diversified tobacco group with manufacturing and marketing operations in some 180 countries and a global market share estimated to top 15%.
