The debate over endovascular surgery versus conventional open surgery to repair an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has come closer to resolution with the introduction of a new endovascular graft. In a nonrandomized phase II trial, surgical teams in Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Birmingham, Alabama, demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of repairing AAAs with the new device in an endovascular procedure, compared with conventional open surgical repair.
