Former Danish farm minister Mariann Fischer Boel is to be the new European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, after she was appointed to the post this week by Commission President-Designate Jose Manuel Barroso.

Barroso announced Boel's succession on Thursday afternoon at a press conference in Brussels, along with job allocations for the rest of his 25-strong chosen team.

Fischer Boel will thus preside over both agriculture and wider rural affairs as from November 1--like her predecessor, Franz Fischler, still currently in post--although fisheries will be split off and run by Joe Borg of Malta.

The Dane has just been replaced at the agriculture ministry in Copenhagen by Hans Christian Schmidt, another moderate right winger who took over the reins in August following Fischer Boel's nomination to the Commission.

Fischer Boel was elected to the Danish parliament in 1990, where she chaired the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee from 1994 to 1998, and the Standing Committee on Trade and Commerce from 1998 to 1999.
