Steel analyst Bernard Lashinsky of Powell, Woodward and Associates, Chicago--known affectionately as "Bernie the Bull" in metals industry circles--was unusually bearish in his assessment of the U.S. economy. Lashinsky was a featured speaker during the Metals Service Center Institute Bar Products Division conference Feb. 22 in San Antonio.

Looking back over the past 18 months, he characterized the U.S. economy as "one damned thing after another," citing such cataclysms as the 9/11 terrorist attack and its aftermath, the implosion of the dot-coms, the collapse of Enron, and the financial crises facing the commercial aviation and communications industries.
