No offense to Fleming or Supervalu, but Wal-Mart may be among the nation's most important grocery wholesalers. For the past two decades the line of demarcation between wholesalers and retailers has been getting increasingly fuzzy, as most large wholesalers now have large retail operations. This trend is sure to continue and will probably intensify.

Wal-Mart, whether most people realize it or not, has quietly wormed its way into the ranks of the top wholesale grocers. This, in itself, is a rarity since Wal-Mart appears to do very little unnoticed. Actually the giant retailer's approach to wholesaling has been so quiet and understated that it may not even be fully aware of its own impact.
