National spending on hospital care increased by $83.6 billion between 1997 and 2001, to $451.2 billion, largely as a result of increased patient volume, according to a recent report from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The New York-based consulting firm conducted the report on behalf of the American Hospital Association and the Federation of American Hospitals.

Patient volume accounted for 55.4% of the increase in hospital spending between 1997 and 2001. Of that amount, 34.4% can be attributed to increased utilization and 21% to population growth.
