When Patricia C. Dunn resigned as chief executive officer of Barclays Global Investors for health reasons last June, two global co-CEOs - located 5,371 miles apart - were named to succeed her. Blake R. Grossman, is a straightforward 17-year BGI veteran, who had been chief investment officer for the firm's global advanced active management business. Andrew Skirton is the voluble 13-year veteran of the firm's London operation and head of its global indexing operation. So far, the twin-headed structure has fared well: BGI's operating profit increased 41% to $149.1 million in 2002, despite the stock market's plunge. Improved earnings reflected net new asset growth of $72 billion, particularly the continued expansion of the firm's advanced active business and growth of its Global iShares funds, which are exchange-traded funds. Messrs. Grossman and Skirton talked with P&I's Joel Chernoff.
