ON MARCH 5, WORLD-renowned piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons launched a yearlong series of events to commemorate its sesquicentennial. Based in Long Island City, New York, and Hamburg, Germany, the company was founded on March 5, 1853.

The full and festive day began when company executives including President Bruce Stevens, Executive Vice-President Frank Mazurco, and 87-year-old Henry Z. Steinway invited members of the press to the unveiling of two extraordinary limited-edition pianos at the landmark Steinway Hall in Manhattan. Special guests included seminal jazz artist Ahmad Jamal, soul/pop jazzer Ramsey Lewis, and 19-year-old pianist/singer/songwriter Peter Cincotti. Lewis and Cincotti took turns entertaining the gathering, putting the two featured instruments through their paces.
