San Diego has been considered a pivotal region for Fine Art since before the turn of the 19th Century.

Notwithstanding the obvious Spanish influences on architecture and design over the years, the San Diego area was the destination for many notable painters from both Western and Eastern Europe during the early part of the last century, as well. Many of those artists had already established successful careers on the East Coast of America but were anxious not only to paint in, but to live in a more temperate climate -- hence the Southern California Impressionist Movement.

Although not as historically visible as French Impressionism, the American Impressionist movement attracted many world-renowned artists, European painters moving to the States from disparate parts of the Continent, as well as young American painters, many of whom had been studying in Paris. These artists either moved to Southern California permanently or at least had second studios here during the early 1900s. Internationally known artists -- such as William Wendt, Edgar Payne and Maurice Braun -- kept studios on both coasts and arranged to ship their work in California for sale in Chicago and New York galleries.
