NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK CELEBRATES ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF TOURISM

With the promise of spring comes a week (May 10 - 18) of national celebration and gratitude for one of America's largest service exports: Travel and Tourism. This year marks the 20th anniversary of National Tourism Week (NTW), an annual celebration of the appreciable economic benefits of tourism to communities across the nation.

Tourism is the third largest industry in San Diego, behind manufacturing and the military. To recognize this powerful economic engine, San Diego will join the rest of the nation in celebration of National Tourism Week. Some of the special NTW events include:

* 10th annual San Diego Hospitality Industry Outlook Breakfast: A Decade of Progress -- Foundation for the Future/. Breakfast meeting will be 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, East Tower. Speakers include Michael Handlery, chairman of the American Hotel & Lodging Association and senior vice president, Handlery Hotels; Reo Carr, Editor-in-Chief, San Diego Daily Transcript; Reint Reinders, CHA, president and CEO, San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau; Thella Bowens, Interim Executive Director of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. The event will be moderated by Patti Roscoe, chairman of Patti Roscoe Destination Management. * Partners in Tourism Event on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at SeaWorld California Adventure Park from 5:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. This annual trade show/event presents displays of various vendors from throughout San Diego County who are Affiliate Members of the San Diego Concierge Association. This celebration of the Tourism industry will feature food, entertainment, door prizes and informational displays. Invitations will be extended to all Front Line Staff including Concierge, Bell Staff, Front Desk, Sales and CS as well as various tourism-related organizations. This free event is sponsored by the San Diego Concierge Association (SDCA) and the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau. For more information, call SDCA at (619) 525-7714.

* ConVis Mixer Festival at the Viejas Shopping Outlet on Thursday, May 15, 2003. Mark your calendars now and join hundreds of ConVis members representing all areas of the region's visitor industry in a special event honoring National Tourism Week. The mixer will feature table displays from an array of member companies, as well as food, entertainment, and an opportunity to tour the Viejas Shopping Outlet and casino.
