Construction, transportation, utilities, finance, insurance, real estate, wholesale and retail trade-the manufacturing industry' has an. impact on these industries and more as it generates jobs, creates capital investments and pays taxes.
But bringing in new manufacturers and keeping the existing ones is a tough task. From 2000 to 2002 the country lost two million manufacturing jobs. Mississippi alone saw 73 'manufacturers close their doors in 2001 resulting in a loss of approximately 9,100 direct jobs. In 2002 117 manufacturers closed their doors, putting 11,063 people out of work.
"We've got to- stabilize our workforce. and do everything we can to support existing businesses in the state," said Jay Moon, president of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association (MMA).
