KOSCIUSKO -- What's the deal with Mississippi Sportswear?
While other manufacturers--particularly apparel producers--are watching work go overseas, causing layoffs and plants closings, Mississippi Sportswear is adding to its payroll and expanding its facility. Not only that, the company is actually looking to take advantage of foreign labor as it prepares to explore new markets following a licensing agreement recently signed with Adidas America.
"Everybody is looking for a niche, for a strength or determination to do something others can't or won't do," said Rob Burnham, founder and now vice president and general manager at Mississippi Sportswear.
John Archer, president of Columbus, Ohio-based Betlin Inc., an apparel manufacturer that acquired Mississippi Sportswear in May 2001, said, "Despite the economic turndown, we have a unique product offering and skill set that is not easily duplicated by others.
