Fewer things are more stressful than losing your job. Multiply that by a major plant closing where 500 or more people are losing their jobs, and the difficulties spread to the entire community.

While there is no sugar coating a tough situation such as a major plant closing, there is a sort of SWAT team in Mississippi that comes to the rescue. The Rapid Response team headed by the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) can provide major assistance to businesses and employees when dealing with layoffs.

Gloria Neal, supervisor of MDA's Rapid Response and Dislocated Workers Programs, heads a team that helps workers who have been laid off transition to another job as soon as possible.

Wanda Land, deputy director of MDA's Employment Training Division, said that Neal and her staff, Lavern Alford and Criss Zebert, do an outstanding job meeting the needs of businesses and employees facing layoffs.

"Imagine facing a room full of people who have just lost their job day after day and many times several times during each of those days," Land said.
