Article Excerpt After two nightclub disasters occurred in less than a week's span last month -- one in West Warwick, R.I., and another in Chicago, Ill. -- nightclub owners in Mississippi are double checking their own safety procedures to be sure similar occurrences don't happen at their establishments.
In Chicago on Feb. 17, 21 died during a stampede that began following nightclub guard's use of pepper spray to control an unruly customer.
In Rhode Island 98 bodies were recovered after a fire broke out Feb. 21 as a result of a band's use of pyrotechnics.
"Can this happen in Mississippi? Yes, it can," said Millard Mackey, Mississippi's state chief deputy fire marshal. But, he said, hopefully Mississippi nightclub owners are following the proper safety precautions to avoid similar disasters.
Mackey explained that it is the responsibility of the business owner to ensure the safety of their patrons....
