PEARL -- Chris Bagwell, founder of Emphasis Florist and Gifts, is a self-taught floral designer. Born in Michigan but raised in Benoit in the Mississippi Delta, Bagwell said he always enjoyed working in the garden.

While at the Mississippi Department of Human Services, where he worked for a decade, he did an arrangement for a retiring co-worker. With that, others began requesting work from Bagwell until he finally decided to do it full time.

Bagwell is also a self-taught entrepreneur. But while his "education" in floral work was rewarding and has gained him a steady, loyal clientele, the lessons in entrepreneurship were much tougher.
