Trends towards the largest cities in the Mississippi Delta extending their pull as regional shopping hubs have intensified in the past year and a half.

Greenville has experienced a boom in commercial real estate in the past 18 months that eclipses anything seen in since the late 1980s, said Tommy Hart, executive director, Industrial Development Foundation (IDF) of Washington County Inc., Greenville.

"For the past 18 months there has been a real flurry of growth the most substantial growth we have had since 1987," Hart said. "We're on almost the completion side of a boom in commercial real estate. We just finished a brand new Wal-Mart Supercenter, and it took a while to fill a pretty large number of units in the strip center associated with the Wal-Mart. At the tail end of that we had the construction of Lowe's. It was the largest period of retail construction experienced in the community in terms of investment and number of jobs added during one year."

Other major periods of growth in commercial activity in Greenville include the opening of the Greenville south shopping center in 1987, and the opening of the mall in 1973....
