KUWAIT CITY - There is a great American tradition playing out in this war.

The custom is simple: Don't blame the soldier for the war.

Sometimes, as in Vietnam, it also has a flip side: Don't praise the soldier, either.

Thus far during the war to free Iraq, even protesters and politicians opposed to American aggression have issued public support for the military personnel carrying out the mission. Coalition soldiers are continually in danger and some have already died or been taken prisoner of war.

You don't have to be around members of the American armed forces for very long to realize two things.

First, the soldiers doing the dirty work are very, very young. That has always been the case. They are the fittest, both physically and mentally, and most have so few...
