Kyle Gustafson figured there would be some hurdles to clear in his first year as head coach of the Eugene Thunder. But after all that happened this season, those hurdles seemed more like a 10,000-meter steeplechase with twice as many steeples.

"I think I'm gray now," joked the 22-year-old from Gresham.

Gustafson, despite his age and inexperience, has guided Eugene through all its turbulent times with a steady calm and keen sense of survival typically associated with those who are older and far less green.

When the team nearly folded back in December - an action that would have thrown Gustafson into unemployment - he rallied his squad, bolstered his roster and went on to win the league championship.
