When tragedy strikes at Lane County public schools, teams of well-trained, caring grown-ups respond to comfort the grieving and lend support to shaken staff members.

Composed of school psychologists, counselors, teachers and community members, the teams set up "support rooms" where students can go when ambushed by a sudden storm of emotion. They step in for teachers who want to be there for students but sometimes need a moment for themselves. They call parents and help write letters home that give tips for handling a saddened child's questions and feelings.

Twice this month, such teams were called to action when sudden loss visited two area high schools, leaving in its wake hundreds of grieving students, teachers and administrators.

A careening pickup truck struck and killed 17-year-old Lindsay Mae Tracey on March 13 as she walked to meet her mother after classes ended at North Eugene High School.
