In a March 19 column, University of Oregon history professor Matthew Dennis took exception to Roosevelt Middle School Principal Morley Hegstrom's attempt to prevent students from staging a walkout to protest the start of the war in Iraq. Just after Dennis' column appeared, a letter signed by five other UO faculty members similarly condemned the principal's actions. Then fliers popped up on cars, garbage cans and walls of nearby businesses, stating: "Shame on Principal Hegstrom!"

This principal was accused of "threatening," "bullying" and "willful intimidation and deception." She was accused of failing to be proud of her students, and blamed for calling in police to monitor the situation.
