As the Olympics lumbered toward the end of the first week in Athens, with doping scandals and empty seats and ongoing security fears, it's been tempting to recall the 1984 games in Los Angeles.

There had been the usual predictions of citywide gridlock and pollution alerts, but when former Olympic hero Rafer Johnson carried the torch at the end of the opening ceremonies--the one featuring 84 pianists playing "Rhapsody in Blue" and a jetpowered spaceman flying into the Coliseum h la James Bond--something lit up all over L.A.
