AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE NEW YORK, NEW YORK MAY 10-JULY 3, 2004

American Ballet Theatre's spring season always pulls out ballet's big guns to showcase its stars and thrill audiences with its large-scale ensembles. This year's program was no different, but the technical excellence and thrilling theatricality of the performances made this a particularly exciting two months.

The official big event was a new version of Raymonda, Marius Petipa's last major ballet. This work has never become a repertoire staple in the same way that Petipa's earlier masterpieces--Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker--have. There is a reason for this. Although Raymonda boasts a glorious score by Alexander Glazounov, a picturesque medieval setting, and much gorgeous dancing, the ballet has almost no story. Despite the glories of some of the choreography, it feels thin and unconvincing. Balanchine knew what he was doing when he threw out the story and culled three wonderful ballets from the score: Pas de Dix, Cortege Hongrois, and Raymonda...
