Phyllis Lamhut began working with Alwin Nikolais at the Henry Street Settlement House in New York when she was 15. It was there that Nikolais forged his innovative multimedia career and trained dancers capable of morphing into the various creatures who vitalized his productions. Lamhut directed the Phyllis Lamhut Dance Company from 1970 to 1996 and is now a freelance choreographer. She also teaches choreography and improvisation at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Lamhut discusses Nikolais' training method and choreography, as well as her own, with writer Kate Mattingly.
