In July the USA International Ballet Competition marked its 25th anniversary with a reunion gala performance. Mikhail Ilyin, Sarah Lamb, and Danny Tidwell were among the medalist who returned to Jackson, Mississippi, for the occasion.
The USA International Ballet Competition held in Jackson, Mississippi, every four years, is one of the world's top competitions. As a dancer, an appearance there can change your career--significantly. It's a chance to see and be seen, to make connections with company directors, coaches, teachers, and other dancers. "It started my career," says Danny Tidwell, junior silver medalist at USA IBC in 2002. Now 20, Tidwell is ah American Ballet Theatre corps member. In one of the magical connections that can happen in Jackson, Mistress of Ceremonies Anna-Marie Holmes, unbeknownst to Tidwell, passed his application videotape to Kevin McKenzie, artistic director of ABT.
