Australian theorist Teresa Brennan was the Schmidt Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Florida Atlantic University, where she designed the first 'public intellectuals' PhD program. Sadly, prior to the publication of her book, Globalisation and its Terrors: Daily Life in the West, Teresa Brennan was killed in a hit-and-run incident. It is a tragic loss to intellectual life in both the United States and Australia.
Arguments about globalisation, free trade, war and fundamentalism have raged throughout the 1990s and into this new century, intensified by the West's reaction to September 11 and to the despair many of us have endured during the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. These conflicts continue with too many reports of atrocities on both sides--the killing of hostages and the torture of prisoners in Iraq being just the most public of those events. Teresa Brennan's analysis, completed before the war against Iraq, predicted this with great prescience.
She draws together a complex argument about the way in which the speed of production, distribution and profit-making in a global marketplace occurs at the expense of people's health, the welfare of the environment and the regeneration of natural resources. Brennan sums this up with her statement that: '... the faster production is the more short-term profit it makes (and the sicker we and the world become)' (p. 15).
Her analysis hinges on the necessity that, for humans and for nature, reproduction and regeneration take time. Her use of reproduction is not akin to Peter Costello's notion of 'doing one's patriotic duty'; rather, it concerns a much broader sense of reproduction more accurately expressed by the term regeneration.
