Donald Horne's latest book, 10 Steps to a More Tolerant Australia, is a distillation of his thoughts about the growing racism in our nation during the past decade. He treats the tendency as though he was a medical specialist, beginning his analysis with: 'Xenophobia is a kind of herpes of the human spirit, sometimes accompanied by fever'. And like any good and caring old-fashioned GP, he doesn't merely provide a diagnosis of Australia's ills, but a treatment and prognosis as well.
