GULFPORT -- The use of 50 acres of prime beachfront property is being debated should the present owner vacate the premises. The owner is the federal government and the current occupant is the Veterans Administration VA centers around the country are undergoing a best use assessment as the veteran's population ages and increases.

A commission. Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services (CARES), was appointed by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi to look at VA centers. According to Chris Alexander, public affairs officer for the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System. the commission made a recommendation to consolidate the services of the Gulfport and Biloxi centers into one location in Biloxi. The earliest the Gulf port property could be available for other uses is 2012.
