Gaming important, but recreation key part of tourism.

To the majority of taxpaying citizens of Mississippi, tourism dollars probably seem quite innocuous. Efforts by the state to beef up the tourism industry have been gaining steam ever since the Fordice administration initiated specific marketing plans aimed at attracting money spending tourists to the state. One of the primary selected audiences for these efforts was tourists active in outdoor recreational activities.

In this regard, Mississippi has made great strides in publicizing tourist offerings throughout the state, but there remains a great deal of opportunity to pursue. Even so, little understanding seems to be communicated to the populace about exactly how tourism dollars work in our economy. It is more or less taken for granted by most people.

A general consensus seems to have been reached by the average Jane and Joe on the street that tourism means gaming and little else.
