...career chief deputy and then elected coroner of Chester County, S.C., Watson Wright has been there: at a drug deal gone fatally sour; at the scene of countless tragic drunk-driving accidents involving teen-agers; at the crime scene investigation at a remote location discovered on an anonymous tip that produced a lime-covered body in a plastic shroud buried 12 feet underground.

Wright is a small-county coroner. Odd hour phone calls are part of the responsibility, as they were on the morning after a sleepless night on the day of this interview. Chris, Wright's spouse, helps out on all fronts and is part of the entire family of four's commitment to two different professions.

"This is no 9 to 5 job," Wright says. "You have to love it. Each case is different, but my expectations of my deputies would be the same if I were from a large metropolitan area."

With those expectations in mind, Wright was among the very first to complete the Certified Medical Investigator, CMI, course work last April. The CMI course was offered at a regional conference in New Orleans, La. in January and two additional training courses will be held in...
