Waiting for her Wednesday night beginning guitar class to start, Ginger Knupp said she definitely won't be singing a happy tune if Lane Community College has to eliminate the class because of budget cuts.

"It definitely would be a bummer," she said.

But personal enrichment classes such as guitar, art, fitness, outdoor recreation and many others are in jeopardy. The state Legislature last fall cut almost $3 million from the statewide community college budget for such classes, sparing only those aimed at work force development and health and safety.

At LCC, that resulted in a loss of $452,000 from the current year's budget. And LCC President Mary Spilde said the state reduction probably will cost the college $750,000 more for each of the next two years.
