SPRINGFIELD - McKenzie-Willamette Hospital has charted a bold new course, ending months of guesswork and anxiety among its 1,100 employees about the fate of the metro area's struggling smaller hospital.
From the lab to the maintenance shop to the emergency room, a sense of relief and excitement filled the corridors after last week's announcement that McKenzie-Willamette will team up with the nation's third-largest for-profit hospital chain to build an $80 million hospital in the Eugene-Springfield area.
"I'm really excited about it," said Debbie Randolph, an ER nurse. "I was a little worried, before anything was announced, about where we were headed, because we were going down the wrong road."
The chief fear among employees and patients was that the 47-year-old hospital, losing money and patients, would be forced to close.
"That was the big issue for many patients," said Mary Meier, a certified nursing assistant in the surgical care unit. "Now we know we're not."
