Board of directors needs to exercise restraint, humility.

In the world of competitive sports, players with large egos are conflicted. On the one hand, they need to glory in their own exploits; on the other hand, a blatant lack of humility will result in swift retribution.

Example: a professional football player taunting an opponent can result in a penalty of lost yardage for his team; a baseball player might get a pitch stuck in his ear for celebrating a home run a little too much.

There is a point where serving on a board of directors requires a little "humility" or it can result in dire consequences for the board and the association. Here are some examples of board action, which may have resulted in an unintended result:

An effort to enforce association rules results in a lawsuit not covered by insurance.

An election victory lorded over a defeated candidate may have caused physical or emotional stress.

A statement by a director at a meeting disparaging a particular ethnic group results in a civil rights lawsuit.

An eviction results in emotional confrontations.
