MERIDIAN -- It's an imposing two-story building. It lies just east of this city's busy 23rd Avenue. The structure and its large parking lot sit astride what used to be a block of 17th Street that was closed to accommodate the facility. It's open for business although construction won't be complete until May.

The 45,000-square-foot Jeff Anderson Regional Cancer Center handles about 180 patients a day despite the ongoing construction. "We squeezed the radiation treatment area by building around it," said Wayne Herrington, the administrative director of the center. Replacement of the old radiation equipment with state of the art apparatus started January 20.

The $10-million building, including equipment, was built by Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center (JARMC), a quick two blocks south. The new structure is equipped to handle outpatient treatment of all types of cancer. That includes both radiation and chemotherapy. "It brings all the services...
