Article Excerpt The contractors' bidding process has changed a lot over the past 20 years thanks to computer technology and sophisticated spreadsheet software.
While many of the mathematical problems in the bidding process have been eliminated, the problems that remain can present quite an expense.
"There are people just constantly losing money and going out of business," said Ron Gaines, vice president of Harris Constructors Inc., who has made some bad estimates himself over the years. "Now if someone came to us and said they wanted a 50,000-square foot building, from our experience we can tell them what it would cost, and the more information we have the more accurate our bid will be," Gaines said.
