GULFPORT -- The building that for many decades rang with the voices of high school students will soon be home to the new U.S. Federal Courthouse.

A $48-million renovation of the historic former Gulfport High School into facilities for the U.S. Federal Courthouse is currently underway.

"It is an extremely challenging project," says Stan Wielgosz, U.S. Federal Courthouse project manager for Roy Anderson Corp., the general contractor for the project. "You are dealing with an 80-year-old building. You have to make sure you can hold it together while you demolish the interior; and then, connect back into the facade and make it look like something that fits in with the architecture of the surrounding area.

Initially plans called for tearing down the Gulfport Library on Highway 90 across from the beach to make room for a new federal courthouse. A large number of residents protested razing the library, and lobbied the government to preserve it. The alternative...
