BILOXI -- Close to 1,000 of the Mississippi Gulf Coast's most influential business and civic leaders heard from keynote speakers Brig. Gen. Michael W. Peterson, commander of the 81st Training Wing at Keesler Air Force Base, regional director of customer operations for Cingular Wireless Catherine Allen, and Dave Dennis, president of Specialty Contractors and Associates Inc. in Gulfport and chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta-New Orleans Branch.

Their speeches were part of the 37th Annual Hancock Bank Gulf Coast Economic Symposium, the theme of which was "Lighting the Course to Economic Opportunity."

"It's amazing that Hancock chooses to give back to businesses and to the community in this way," said Michael Olivier, executive director of the Harrison County Development Commission. "I think it's a great contribution."

The symposium has come a long way in 37 years. George Schloegel, president and CEO of Hancock Bank, recalled its beginning in 1966.
