Research published today by the Department for Work and Pensions carried out by the National Centre for Social Research explores lone parents' experiences of participating in NDLP and provides an estimate of the net impact of the national NDLP programme. The research addresses the following questions: who takes part in NDLP, what does taking part involve and what is the impact of NDLP? Additional methodological advice was provided by Prof. Peter Dolton (University of Newcastle) and Prof. Jeff Smith (University of Maryland).

The research involved a postal questionnaire of 42,000 lone parents on Income Support in Autumn 2000, followed approximately 12 months later by 2,500 interviews with a matched sample of NDLP participants and non-participants who had originally completed the questionnaire.

The rates of participation in NDLP vary, with different sub-groups taking part more rapidly than others.
