Article Excerpt Beryl Ann Byrd is hardly typical of many women business owners in one sense -- she didn't even have a business plan when she set up shop 16 years ago. She ended up going into business for herself because her boss at the time was exasperated with her.
Byrd, owner of Mission Gorge-based Just Fabulous Pastries, laughs at the story now.
"It was not working out at the restaurant where I was a pastry chef. We were clashing and just not getting along. And the owner of the restaurant said, If you go away and start making desserts, I'll buy the desserts from you. But -- leave."'
Byrd's unexpected jump into entrepreneurship illustrates that there are as many ways for women to run a business as there are women running a business. Some capitalize on years of experience, while others have "bootstrapped" their way through the business world.
As for Byrd, she has grown her pastry shop from its unexpected beginning in 1987 to a high-end wholesale and retail operation with eight employees and $500,000 in revenues last year. Her elaborate creations, costing anywhere from $50 to $5,000 each, sell to commercial clients such as La Costa Resort & Spa, the Catamaran, L'Auberge Del Mar, along with occasional walk-in customers who hear of her through word-of mouth, she said.
