La Jolla company set to launch ''wrinkle filler'' in U.S.: FDA may approve Artecoll by Artes Medical this week. (Biotech).

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas Hamilton can hardly wait for U.S. regulators to approve a European wrinkle filler to give his clients the "Hollywood-esque" luscious lips and youthful smile they crave.

The filler, Artecoll, has been marketed in some European countries since 1994 and in Canada since 1998. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will consider final approval on Feb. 28.

For Dr. Stefan Lemperle, chief executive of Artes Medical, the La Jolla-based firm which will present Artecoll's clinical data to FDA officials and plans to launch the product nationwide this summer, problems are certain.

These range from the potential health risks of the product, to regulatory issues, to a territorial battle over Artecoll distribution rights in Canada.
