Article Excerpt EL CAJON -- As a teen, Bob Taylor fell asleep reading Irving Sloane's book "Classic Guitar Construction."
Taylor played a $36 Coronet in those days, but he fancied a pricey 12-string guitar.
He was a whiz kid when it came to wood and making things, so he set out to build the guitar of his dreams. Taylor made three guitars in high school woodworking class, refining them at night while he worked at a gas station.
Taylor, 47, still makes acoustic guitars today.
Up to 80 models. More than 64,000 last year. At Taylor Guitars in El Cajon.
The 29-year-old privately held company reported revenues of $47.2 million last year. Hundreds of the world's top artists play Taylor guitars. They include Garth Brooks, members of Styx and Aerosmith, Sting, James Taylor, and Faith Hill.
One of the guitars Taylor made in high school stands near his desk today. The design, which sets Taylor apart, was born of youthful ignorance. Instead of the traditional "fat and clunky" neck, Taylor kept filing until his immature hand easily grasped the fingerboard.
"We invented the easy-to-play steel string (acoustic) guitar," Taylor said....
