THE PRETENDERS are most often identified with the 1970s British punk/New Wave scene, but it was reggae music that first grabbed the group's leader, Chrissie Hynde, when she emigrated to England at the age of 22.

"We've had reggae songs on all of our albums," Hynde said by phone from a tour stop in Arizona. "Everything's become so bland and mainstream that anything that's really interesting isn't going to make it."

Hynde called reggae the best kept secret in show biz.

"Look at what's big in (the) mainstream. It's all very, very bland, like baby food, and I think reggae has a lot more edge to it."

Hynde never had encountered reggae while growing up in Akron, Ohio. She said she thought she was hearing the future of music when she first listened to Peter Tosh and other reggae stars of the 1970s.

Although strains of reggae show up frequently in the Pretenders' music, the group's most recent release, "Loose Screw," is perhaps its most heavily reggae-influenced album to date.
