LOS ANGELES - Opting to not rely on anyone but themselves, the Ducks did exactly - if not perfectly - what Oregon women's basketball coach Bev Smith had requested.

They took care of business, dumping a 75-70 loss on USC at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Thursday night and dodging the first round of next week's Pac-10 Conference tournament.

"We did what we had to do," said Smith, who had a crowd of just 547 in the 15,500-seat facility watching what the Ducks did. "We were not going to wait around for other results."

The victory - Oregon's third straight and fourth in the last five games against the Trojans - severed the tie with USC in the Pac-10 standings.

With only Saturday's date at UCLA remaining in the regular season, the Ducks nudged their conference record to 8-9 and, more importantly, will finish no worse than sixth in the final standings no matter what any other team does, above or below them in the standings.

That means, of course, Oregon will not be playing next Friday when the seventh-, eighth-, ninth- and 10th-place teams start the four-day, single-elimination tournament at San Jose, Calif....
