It was a subdued day in the neighborhood on Thursday, as folks in and around Eugene reflected on the passing of children's television icon Fred McFeely "Mister" Rogers.

The soft-spoken host of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" - produced from 1968 to 2001, and still broadcast in reruns on more than 300 Public Broadcasting Service stations nationwide - died early Thursday in Pittsburgh after a brief bout with stomach cancer. He was 74.

"I myself was a little sad, after watching him for so many years," said Jeanie Phearson, owner of Cuddle Time Daycare in Junction City. "The whole program was such a good role model for children, especially in this day and age."

Phearson said Rogers' show has always been one of the favorites of children...
