If they're leaning at all - and they won't make a decision for several weeks yet - most of the Lane County commissioners don't seem inclined to begin charging people to visit Mount Pisgah and the Howard Buford Recreation Area southeast of Eugene.

"I think Mount Pisgah is a treasure, and I don't want to charge people to enjoy it," Commissioner Tom Lininger said during Wednesday's meeting of the county's elected officials. "It's a place of natural beauty on its own - the county doesn't provide that. It would be like making people pay to see the sun rise."

The county's Parks Department has given the commissioners several alternatives for raising money to help defray the rising cost of maintaining and improving county park facilities, which now get no financial support from the county's general fund.
